Trail in Central New York

The North Country Trail section within Central New York runs from Watkins Glen to Forestport. Forestport is the gateway to the Adirondacks. The North Country Trail (NCT) shares the path with the Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) up until Cuyler Hill State Forest. The trail is blazed white instead of the normal NCT blue during most of this stretch of the NCT.
The NCT blazes are finally BLUE beginning north of Cuyler Hill State Forest. In Tioughnioga WMA the NCT leaves the FLTC trail system and follows trail supported by the local chapter of the North Country Trail Association hiking club, the NCTA CNY Chapter. The trail starts to follow the Old Erie Canal in Canastota until it reaches Rome. As you approach Rome, the North Country Trail passes the historical Erie Canal Village. In Rome, the trail passes through Fort Stanwix National Monument. North of Rome the NCT follows the old Black River Canal up to Forestport, NY.
