Trail in New York
|
The North Country Trail enters New York in Allegany State Park and follows the Finger Lakes Trail for almost 380 miles as it winds its way eastward through the southern part of the state. The trail is blazed white instead of the normal NCT blue during this stretch. This is the only place along the whole 4600+ mile trail where the NCT is not blazed blue.
In Cuyler Hill State Forest near Truxton, NY the NCT turns and follows the Onondaga Trail for about 40 miles until it meets the Link Trail in Tioughnioga WMA. From there the NCT follows the old Link Trail through Cazenovia, NY to Canastota, NY and then Old Erie Canal Heritage Trail. The NCT is blazed the more familiar blue throughout this stretch of the trail, although other names of the trail can make it confusing for some hikers. In our opinion, there is no reason to keep the name Onondaga Trail and we believe that the name Link Trail has been removed for the part of the NCT that travels along that stretch of the former Link Trail.
The NCT follows the towpath of the Old Erie Canal to Rome, NY. From this point the trail is under construction, but will pass through Fort Stanwix in Rome, then follow the old Black River Canal. The trail begins again just south of Pixey Falls State Park and follows the old Black River Canal all the way to Forestport, NY (gateway to the Adirondacks). From there the trail has been proposed by the NY DEC to run through the southern part of the Adirondacks. To see this plan visit the DEC website or info from our website. Remember this is only the proposed route in the Adirondacks as there are currently no signs or markers for the North Country Trail in the Adirondacks accept at Crown Point.
