The Abbott Loop is a well marked, easy to follow, rugged eight mile loop hike in Danby State Forest. This loop utilizes the Abbott Loop Trail (orange blazes) and the Finger Lakes Trail / North Country Trail (white blazes). This is one of the most popular loop hikes in Central New York. This loop hike features the scenic views from an overlook called Thachers Pinnacles.

From the trailhead on Michigan Hollow Rd, head west following the white blazes of the Finger Lakes Trail / North Country Trail and soon cross Michigan Creek on a footbridge. This bridge is called "Diane's Crossing".  Shortly after the crossing reach the western terminus of the orange blazed Abbott Loop Trail. Ascend 400 feet in elevation over the next half mile before descending to a crossing over a tributary of Michigan Creek. At 1.3 miles cross seasonal dirt Bald Hill Road and another option if you want a shorter loop. Soon the trail will ascend to Thatchers Pinnacles and spectacular views of the Inlet Valley.

Now the trail loses over 500 feet in elevation as it winds to Michigan Hollow Road. Some hiking guides say to turn right at the road.  You should turn left and follow road for just a short distance, then the trail turns right off the road just over Michigan Creek. Now the trail begins a 500 foot elevation climb and passes a register along the climb. This loop has many up and downs and has a total elevation change of over 1500 feet.

Look below for a map and description of this loop hike.  There are also a few pictures of this popular hike below.
