Tompkins County is located in the popular Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The population of the county according to the 2010 US Census is 101,564 and the county seat is located in the city of Ithaca. Cornell University and Ithaca College are located in the city of Ithaca.
The highest point in Tompkins County is located at Connecticut Hill. The elevation is 2099 feet and this spot is located near the Finger Lakes Trail. This area is part of the 11,000+ acre Connecticut Hill WMA. The Finger Lakes Trail coincides with the 4600 mile North Country National Scenic Trail as it passes through the county.
Tompkins County is an outdoor enthusiast's heaven as there are many hiking trails, state forests, state parks and nature preserves located in the county. It is a very popular tourist destination due to its gorges and waterfalls. One very popular and challenging hike is the eight mile Abbott Loop located in Danby State Forest. The loop hikes at Robert Treman and Taughannock Falls State Parks are also very popular with hikers. Another popular destination with bikers and hikers is Hammond Hill State Forest.
