Hiking Safety

From skiing and snowshoeing in winter to camping, boating and hiking in the warmer months, New York has it in the many state owned lands in New York. Here hunters, anglers, birdwatchers, hikers, nature photographers -- anyone who likes outdoor pursuits can access a wealth of forests and streams, mountains, marshes, ponds and lakes.

How much does it cost to visit these state lands?  NOTHING.  It is free to all to enjoy.  Most lands also allow free camping, but for many of the state forests this is primitive camping (check the regulations for the state land you are visiting).  Many state lands have hiking trails.  See below or above for hiking safety tips as well as links to many of the state lands in our area with a lot of helpful information about the land!  Begin your adventure in one of New York's State Lands!
