Hiking in Schuyler County

Schuyler County is in the western part of central New York, west of Ithaca at the south end of Seneca Lake. The county seat is located in Watkins Glen and the estimated 2008 population for the county was 18,888. Watkins Glen State Park is one of the most popular state parks in New York. Finger Lakes National Forest is located in the northeastern part of the county.
There are numerous waterfalls located in the county, besides the 19 in Watkins Glen State Park. Hector Falls and Excelsior Glen along NY 414. Aunt Sarah's Falls and She-qua-ga Falls can be found in the small hamlet of Montour Falls as well as Eagle Cliff Falls in Havana Glen Park. These are some of the waterfalls you can explore in Schuyler County.
The Finger Lakes Trail / North Country National Scenic Trail travels across the county, including a section that passes through Watkins Glen State Park. The Interloken Trail is very popular in Finger Lakes National Forest. There are other trails and camping available in Finger Lakes National Forest.
When the Catharine Valley Trail is completed, it will be a 12-mile, multi-use trail that will connect Watkins Glen State Park and Mark Twain State Park. Most of the trail is on portions of abandoned Northern Central Railroad and Chemung Canal towpath corridors that parallel NY 14. The trail spans Schuyler and Chemung counties, passing through the communities of Watkins Glen, Montour Falls, Millport, and Pine Valley to Horseheads.
The highest point in the county is the 2096 feet summit of Sugar Hill, located west of Watkins Glen in Sugar Hill State Forest. There is a fire tower located at the summit that provides spectacular panoramic views. Sugar Hill State Forest is home to the 40+ mile Six Nations Trail System.
