Hiking in Adirondack Park Central Adirondacks Blue Ridge Wilderness Sawyer Mountain
|
THE TRAILHEAD: NY 28/30, 6.7 miles east of Blue Mountain Lake village. There is a well marked parking area. The GPS coordinates are N43 48.657 W74 19.251.
THE HIKE: The yellow marked trail ascends south from the parking area. The grade levels off for a short time before moderate climbing begins. After crossing an open stretch of rock at 1.0 mile, the trail turns right across sloping rock and reenters the forest.
A side trail to the left has a lookout to the east (nice views). The wooded 2618 foot summit is at 1.05 miles. The trail descends slightly to a better lookout 270 feet beyond the summit. The mountains seen from this surprising view include Panther Mountain, Wakely Mountain, Snowy Mountain, among others. The elevation change for this out and back 2.2 mile hike is 630 feet.
Another nice hike is just 1.5 miles to the west of the Sawyer Mountain trailhead. This is the Rock Lake Trail that leads to Rock Lake in 0.8 miles. At the snowmobile trail junction turn right and go over bridge. After climbing a small hill, veer left on the red marker foot trail and this will lead you to the campsite and the lake. There are some nice views.
