The red DEC marked Prospect Mountain Trail is 1.5 miles long, leads steeply at times to the 2021 foot summit of Prospect Mountain. To reach the trail from Lake George Village, turn left on Montcalm Street to Smith Street. At Smith Street, turn south a half block to the sign indicating the start of the trail, where it crosses the Northway on a pedestrian bridge. The climb to the summit is difficult but rewarding.

Most people just drive the 5.9 mile toll road up to near the summit and then either walk or take the bus to the summit.  There are great views from the summit.  Its worth a drive to explore the summit!  The Veterans Memorial Highway (as the toll road is known) was opened in 1969.  At the first scenic turnout be sure to at least take the short 0.2 mile hike to Rattlesnake Cobble.  Look for the trail at the end of the parking area.  The easy to moderate short hike leads to a rocky outcrop with nice views.

Watch a video below of the drive to the summit as well as the spectacular views.  There are also a couple of pictures and maps.
