Goodman
Mountain

A 1.6 mile hiking trail was constructed to the 2176 foot summit of Goodman Mountain in the summer of 2014 that was dedicated to Andrew Goodman, a twenty year old civil rights activist murdered in Mississippi. Goodman and two fellow activists: James Chaney and Michael Schwerner; were kidnapped and killed by the Ku Klux Klan in June 1964. The trailhead is located off NY 30 south of Tupper Lake in Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest of the Adirondacks.

The name of the 2,176-foot peak was changed in 2002 from Litchfield Mountain to Goodman Mountain. The trailhead is found along NY 30 just 0.4 miles south of the NY 421/Horseshoe Lake junction. There is a large parking area with a DEC sign at the entrance along NY 30. The GPS coordinates for the parking area is N44 06.942 W74 32.148 for those who have GPS devise. There is an informational kiosk that explains the history surrounding Andrew Goodman and this trail.

The trail in the beginning follows an old paved road. The trail immediately crosses a newly built footbridge over Cold Brook. The first 0.25 mile of the trail is accessible to wheelchairs as the trail follows the old paved road on a slight grade. Beyond this accessible stretch, the highway grade steepens, and the trail workers removed only a narrow band of dirt. It's amazing the amount of dirt that was on this old road.

At 0.9 miles the trail turns left, leaving the old paved road. The trail ascends gradually, making this hike suitable for casual hikers and families with young children. The summit has nice views, although not 360 degree views. The most prominent peak in the near distance is Coney Mountain. Coney Mountain is a great 1.1 mile hike to 360 degree views, located just to the south along NY 30.

We have a video, a couple of pictures and a map below of this great hike located off NY 30. /font>We recommend exploring both Coney Mountain and Goodman Mountain for anyone visiting in the Tupper Lake area or camping at LLake Eaton State Campground. This hike can be enjoyed by most members of your family.
