Fifth Peak is located along the Tongue Mountain Range in the Lake George Wild Forest of the southeastern Adirondacks. There is a lean to located near the peak and there are spectacular views, making this a very popular hiking destination in the Lake George Area. It is a 2.8 mile one way trip with an elevation gain of over 1400 feet for this hike. This area is home of timber rattlesnakes, so be sure to be alert and cautious for these species especially on rocky ledges in the sunlight. But remember they can be found anywhere in this area.

There is a DEC parking area known as the Clay Meadow Trailhead Parking Area and is located along NY 9N. The GPS coordinates are N43 37.763 W73 36.506 for those who have a GPS devise. This is where most people start their hike to Fifth Peak, unless you plan to hike the whole Tongue Mountain Range Trail. From the trail register, the blue marked trail descends to cross a stream at 0.2 miles. At 0.4 miles reach the junction of the red marked Five Mile Point Trail. Head straight ahead on the red marked Five Mile Point Trail.

Soon there is an unmarked trail on your right that travels a short distance to a waterfall. The trail is steep at times and you'll cross a few streams as you climb up the Tongue Mountain Range. At 1.3 miles the trail levels off. The trail does some more climbing before reaching the junction of the Tongue Mountain Range Trail at 2.0 miles. Turn right and now follow the blue markers of the Tongue Mountain Range Trail. At 2.5 miles reach the junction of the yellow marked Fifth Peak Lean To Trail on your left. Soon reach the lean to and then the end of the trail at 2.8 miles. There are views galore here.

You can find more info on this hike as well as many other hikes in this area by purchasing the Hiking Guide to the Adirondack Eastern Trails.
