Hiking in Adirondack Park Jessup River Wild Forest Southwestern Adirondacks Fawn Lake
|
Fawn Lake is a large, scenic lake located completely on state lands in Jessup River Wild Forest. An easy 0.5 mile trail leads to the eastern shore of the lake, where there are primitive campsites. Another trail, the Willis Vly Trail (which is also a snowmobile trail) loops around the north end of the lake. The lake is located near Speculator and the Moffitt Beach State Campground.
There is a small parking area near the end of Fawn Lake Road (about 0.1 miles past the snowplow turnaround and the end of the paved road). There is a trail register located near the start of the trail. The trail is unmarked, but really easy to follow. It is a relatively level and a pleasant walk in the woods to the lake.
From the trail register, follow the well used, wide trail past a gate. At 0.2 miles reach a marked junction. Ignore the arrow pointing right and take the left fork to reach the shore of Fawn Lake at 0.5 miles. Be careful of the numerous side trails near the shore, so you don't get lost.
For those who want to explore the lake further, you can take the unmarked snowmobile trail (Willis Vly Trail) about 0.7 miles to the northwestern shore of the lake. The trail crosses the outlet of the lake at 1.2 miles. The DEC has proposed building a lean to on the southwestern shore of the lake, as well as more hiking trails in the Fawn Lake area.
Directions: From NY 8 take Tamarack Road to its end, then left of Fawn Lake Road. Follow Fawn Lake Road past the snowplow turn around and the end of the paved road. Follow the dirt road 0.1 mile to a wide pull off at a sharp right turn. Parking is available here. The GPS tracks are N43 28.940 W74 26.645 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.
