This is the perfect leg stretcher for those traveling along NY 28 between Old Forge and Blue Mountain Lake in the Adirondacks. A short, easy 0.3 mile hike to Death Brook Falls is your destination. Also known as Hidden Falls, Death Brook Falls is located in the Blue Ridge Wilderness, which is located in the Central Adirondacks. There is a small pull off along NY 28 and a DEC sign marks the start of the trail.

The start of the trail is somewhat easy to pass by while you are whizzing by on NY 28. There is a yellow gate at the start of the trail. The GPS coordinates are N43 48.758 W74 35.774 for those who have a GPS devise. The trail is marked with blue NY DEC markers, but is well worn and easy to follow. I have visited the waterfall 5 times since 2009 and have yet to see it more than just a drip. I'm guessing the best time to visit is in the spring during snow melt time or after a major rain storm.

From NY 28, pass the yellow gate that blocks vehicles from entering. I believe that there once was a parking area further down, but since this is technically a wilderness area the DEC closed the access to vehicles. There is a CLOSED sign on the gate, but that does not mean that the trail is closed. Follow the old road and soon pass an area that probably was the old parking area. Continue on the narrower path and soon reach a fork. Take the left fork. I believe the right fork winds around to the top of the waterfall, however I have never taken the faint path to explore it.

Soon you'll start to hear the waterfall and the last stretch of the trail takes you along or into the stream to reach the base of this waterfall. Look below for a couple of maps, pictures and two videos of the waterfall. The second video shows the waterfall with much more water rushing over. No matter what time of year it is, this is a great get out of your car and stretch the legs hike for those traveling along NY 28 in the Adirondacks.
