Chemung County is in the southern part of Central New York State along the Pennsylvania border in what is called the Southern Tier.  The county is located in the Finger Lakes Region of New York.  The county seat is Elmira and the 2008 estimated population of the county was 87,813.  The county has seen a 4% decline in population since 2000.

You might see signs posted along roads in Chemung County that refer to the area as "Mark Twain Country" because of the many years the author lived and wrote in Elmira.  Mark Twain State Park is located in the county.  Mark Twain State Park is the home of one of the most scenic and challenging 18-hole golf courses in the area.

When the Catharine Valley Trail is completed, it will be a 12-mile, multi-use trail that will connect Watkins Glen State Park and Mark Twain State Park.  Most of the trail is on portions of abandoned Northern Central Railroad and Chemung Canal towpath corridors in New York's Finger Lakes region. The trail spans Schuyler and Chemung counties, passing through the communities of Watkins Glen, Montour Falls, Millport, and Pine Valley to Horseheads.

The highest point in the county is located on a 1914 foot unnamed hill on private property near Catlin State Forest.  The high point is just off Post Creek Road near the small hamlet of Post Creek.
