On Saturday we traveled to Boonville to hike a short, easy section of the North Country Trail that follows the historic Black River Canal. The 1.5 mile section of trail we hiked had an overall elevation gain of only seven feet, which is amazing when you walk and look around at the area around the canal. We started our hike near the Boonville Covered Bridge and hiked to Moose River Road, then back to explore the covered bridge.
At 0.4 miles there is a bench on your left. At 0.75 miles you'll cross Sargent Road, which marks the mid point of where your walking to. At one mile you'll cross a bridge that allows overflow from the canal to drain. At 1.25 miles is a gas pipeline ROW, which creates a nice view to your left. Pass another bench on your left and reach Moose River Road at 1.5 miles. The North Country Trail follows the towpath for another 8+ miles to Forestport if you want to explore further.
This hike can be enjoyed by everyone in your family. We saw numerous other hikers, including a large group of day hikers, a few bikers and even two people kayaking. Looking for a change of pace? Head to Boonville and enjoy a section of the North Country Trail. Below we have a few pictures, a video and a map of this great hike.
