Hiking in Adirondack Park Northeastern Adirondacks Sentinel Range Wilderness
The interior of the 23,000 acre Sentinel Range Wilderness is probably one of the least visited areas of the Adirondacks. We believe this is due to the lack of trails and views from its prominent mountains located on the main mountain range. One of the only trails to visit a mountain in this wilderness is the trail to 3600 foot Pitchoff Mountain. There are also a series of trails to three ponds on the northern part of the wilderness.
The popular ponds off NY 86 are Copperas Pond, Owen Pond and Winch Pond. You can also visit Holcomb Pond, a surprising gem off River Road. Nice views are found on the small Cobble Mountain located off Bartlett Road. The interior mountains offer no views and no trails, so there is little reason to explore, unless you want a true remote experience. The only trail that travels across the wilderness is the 3.5 mile Old Military Road Trail.
Most access the Sentinel Range Wilderness from NY 86 or NY 73. Look below for a list of destinations as well as a map of the area.
