South River
Falls

At 83 feet tall the South River Falls are the third highest waterfall in Shenandoah National Park. A moderate 2.6 mile round-trip hike takes you from the South River Picnic Grounds to a stone walled observation spot overlooking the falls. There will be an elevation gain of 850 feet on your 1.3 mile return trip back to the picnic grounds. You could continue down to the base of the falls, however that would add another 1.5 miles of steep and rocky hiking to your adventure.

Park in the South River Picnic Grounds parking area near the trail for South River Falls. These picnic grounds are located at milepost 62.8 along Skyline Drive. The picnic grounds were once the site of a stave mill that produced barrels, tubs and butter churns. From the parking area follow the South River Falls Trail for about 0.1 miles to the trail post marking the junction of the white blazed Appalachian Trail. Continue straight on South River Falls Trail for another 1.2 miles before reaching the walled observation spot. To return, simply retrace your steps back to the parking area.
