Snead Farm

The start of this hike is located at the end of the Dickey Ridge Picnic Area near milepost 5.1 of Skyline Drive.  This hike takes you to the remains of buildings used by the Snead family for their farm.  Most do the easy 1.4 mile out and back hike to the remains of the Snead Farm.  You can also utilize the Dickey Ridge Trail for a longer, moderately strenuous 3.2 mile loop hike.

The Snead Farm was an active, privately owned operation until the 1950's.  Today, the remnants of the farm are still visible.  The barn still stands, as does the root cellar.  The stone remains of the residence fill an open area.  As you look around, you can imagine the difficulty they must've had clearing the land.

If you do the tougher loop hike, take a right at the junction of the Dickey Ridge Trail and make sure you take the short side trail on the top of Dickey Hill for a nice view.  There is a hang glider launch point close to the view point.  The summit of Dickey Hill is 2444 feet.  Now it's all downhill from here.
