Shenandoah National Park
This is a popular hike that features a 2.6 mile round trip hike to the 67 foot Rose River Falls. This moderate hike does have an elevation gain of 720 feet that you'll need to climb on your way back to the trailhead. For most of this hike you'll be in one of the parks federally designated wilderness areas. This isn't the highest waterfall in the park, but it's a pretty impressive one that gets spectacular after heavy rains.
Park at the Fishers Gap Overlook located at milepost 49.4 along Skyline Drive. Be sure you park at the overlook and not at the fire road next to the overlook. From the overlook, cross Skyline Drive (watch for vehicles at this blind curve) and walk down the Rose River Fire Road for about 200 feet to a trail post. Turn left here onto the Rose River Trail. The first part of this trail is also a horse trail. At 0.5 miles stay straight as the horse trail turns left. The trail is still wide but gets a bit steeper. At about 1.0 miles you come to another trail post stating that the falls are 0.3 miles away.
Now the trail becomes narrower and the Rose River comes in on your left. Soon you'll get your first glimpse of the falls. Walk a bit further for other excellent viewing spots. To return, simply retrace your steps to the parking area. We recommend purchasing Shenandoah National Park (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map), Hiking Shenandoah National Park and Best Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park to help plan your adventure in Shenandoah National Park.
