Shenandoah National Park

Hightop Mountain

This three mile round trip hike along the Appalachian Trail has a climb of over 900 feet that features superb views. At 3587 feet, Hightop Mountain is the largest peak in the southern district of Shenandoah National Park. Start your hike from milepost 66.7 along Skyline Drive. There is a small parking lot here. Cross the road and begin to follow the white blazes of the Appalachian Trail.

After 1.5 miles you reach a rock ledge with partial views. This is not what you just worked so hard for. Continue a bit further, past the summit to a side trail that leads to another rock ledge with expansive views westward. The tiny overlook below along Skyline Drive is the Swift Run Overlook. We recommend purchasing Appalachian Trail Guide to Shenandoah National Park, Shenandoah National Park (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map), Hiking Shenandoah National Park and Best Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park to help plan your adventure in Shenandoah National Park.
