Appalachian Trail from
South River Picnic Grounds

This round trip hike of six miles features a scenic section of the Appalachian Trail that is a huge favorite of some hikers. We've read that some hikers do this stretch again and again. If six miles seems to far for you, then just hike a mile or so before turning back. Some stop just prior to the AT descending steeply into Swift Gap or park two vehicles, one at South River Picnic Grounds and the other at Swift Gap.

Park in the South River Picnic Grounds parking area near the trail for South River Falls. These picnic grounds are located at milepost 62.8 along Skyline Drive. The picnic grounds were once the site of a stave mill that produced barrels, tubs and butter churns. From the parking area follow the South River Falls Trail for about 0.1 miles to the trail post marking the junction of the white blazed Appalachian Trail. Turn right onto the AT south and follow the white blazes.

You'll pass some trail posts but just stay on the white blazed Appalachian Trail until you feel like turning around, then simply retrace your steps back to the picnic area. We recommend purchasing Appalachian Trail Guide to Shenandoah National Park, Shenandoah National Park (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map), Hiking Shenandoah National Park and Best Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park to help plan your adventure in Shenandoah National Park.
