There is very little you can find for free now a days, however a visit to the Rogers Environmental Education Center is not only free to visit but will leave you wanting to come back for more. Located on NY 80 just west of Sherburne, NY and run by the NY DEC, there are a variety of habitats to explore in the 600+ acres of the Rogers Center.
The grounds of the Rogers Center is open daily, 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset. The buildings are open weekdays from 8:30am to 4:45pm and Saturdays from 1pm to 4:45pm. During June through August the buildings are also open on Sunday from 1pm to 4:45pm. The buildings are closed during state holidays. No pets or alcoholic beverages are allowed on the grounds of the Rogers Center.
The visitor center offers exhibits, rest rooms, a library and the upper gallery of the VC offers visitors a view of the marsh where you can see wildlife in their natural habitat. Microphones bring the outdoor sounds inside. You will also find picnic tables, grills, pavilion, hiking trails in a beautiful setting.
There are over six miles of trails available to explore with nearly two miles of trails in the area surrounding the visitor center. Across the street from the main parking area is another mile of trails that wind its way to the Farm Tower where there is a nice view of the Chenango Valley.
There are trails at two other parcels nearby called Cush Hill and Adams Farm. You'll find well maintained and well built hiking trails at the Rogers Center for everyone in the family to enjoy. We have included links to maps from the DEC for each of the parcels as well as four suggested loop hikes to enjoy while your visiting.

Rogers Environmental Education Center is located on NY 80, 1 mile west of the intersection of NY 80 and NY 12 in Sherburne, New York.
From Utica Area...Take NY 12 south to Sherburne, turn right on NY 80.
From Binghamton Area...Take Interstate 81 north to NY 12 north to Sherburne, turn left on NY 80.
From Syracuse Area...Take I-690 east to I-481 south to NY 92 east to Cazenovia. Take US 20 east to NY 46 south to NY 12B south to NY 12 south in Sherburne, turn right on NY 80.
