Buttermilk Falls

The Buttermilk Falls that are located south of Long Lake are one of the most visited waterfalls in the Adirondacks. They are a short, scenic waterfall that is easily reached by an extremely short, flat walk. The falls itself is not overly spectacular, but the overall setting of the cascade is scenic.

The path leads from the road to some rocks above the falls. Straight ahead the Raquette River seems to be cascading slightly above you, as the rocks over which the water flows appear higher than the surrounding forest. A careful walk to the base of the falls and you see the full effect of the cascade.

A short walk upstream, above the falls, brings you to a pleasant spot along the Raquette River.  Don't expect to be alone at the waterfalls, especially in the summer and fall.  There is a picnic table for a perfect lunch.
