Hiking in Broome County

Whether visiting one of the two state parks, the numerous state forests or one of the county parks, you'll find great places to explore in Broome County. The county is located in the Southern Tier of New York, with Binghamton as the county seat. The population of the county according to the 2000 US Census was 200,536 which was a decline of over 5% from the 212,160 that lived in the county during the 1990's. The population for the county in 2010 was 200,600 according to the US Census.
The highest point in the county is Slawson Hill with an elevation of 2087 feet in the Town of Sanford. The hill is located on private property located in the northeastern part of the county, near the border with Chenango County. The hill is located nearby Melondy Hill State Forest. A local gem in the county is Whitney Point WMA, with hiking/biking trails and kayaking in Whitney Point Reservoir. Chenango Valley State Park has numerous miles of hiking trails as well as a state campground.
