Hiking in Adirondack Park West-Central Adirondacks Moose River Plains Wild Forest Benedict Creek Trail
|
This old snowmobile trail is not marked or maintained any longer, however it still is shown on some hiking and snowmobile maps. The trail follows the marshy banks of Benedict Creek and travels by an old growth forest. It's one of those unknown spots in the Adirondacks that is hard to find and if you don't mind exploring along a path that isn't maintained any longer, this is hike is for you.
To find the start of the trail you must turn off on a side spur road for campsite #67 at the sharp turn 2.6 miles from the junction of Rock Dam Road and 1.1 miles north of the 'T' junction of Otter Brook Road. There is a gated barricade just past the campsite, which is for the old snowmobile trail. There is parking for a couple of cars at the campsite.
Campsite #67 is where you'll find the old Benedict Creek Trail
From the campsite, pass by the barricade and follow the old road 0.2 miles past a small clearing on your left, then downhill straight ahead. Soon you'll reach the creek and the trail follows the left side of the marshy banks of the creek. There is no official end to this trail, it just becomes fainter and fainter to follow. At one time the old snowmobile trail continued on to Mohegan Lake.
Benedict Creek Trail begins at this old gate near the campsite
Some old maps show a trail that loops up toward Bear Pond. We are unsure if there is anything resembling a trail left in this area and if there was, the old trail traveled through a wet area. However, anything is possible for those who enjoy exploring the wilderness off the beaten paths.
