Hiking in Adirondack Park Belfry Mountain
|
For those looking for an easy, quick hike that rewards you with views of the high peaks of the Adirondacks, the Green Mountains of Vermont, plus the Champlain Valley, then Belfry Mountain is for you. Plus the mountain features a fire tower.
At 1840 feet, Belfry Mountain is small, however the views are spectacular. The trail is a service road for the communication towers that are on the mountain. A short 0.35 mile hike along the gravel road with an overall elevation gain of 137 feet is this easy hike. Not a misprint, 137 foot elevation gain for this hike (although the DEC sign says its 120 feet gain). There is no other hike in the Adirondacks that gives so much for such little effort.
For those who don't have much time, or are looking for a family hike with a huge reward without the huge effort; this hike is for you. There is no parking area, just shoulder parking along County Route 70. You can easily miss the trailhead, if your not paying attention as a small DEC sign marks the start of the hike near a metal gate.
The GPS coordinates for the start of the trail is N44 06.139 W73 32.780 for those with a GPS device to help find the trailhead. If your in this area, take the time to explore this truly large 1840 foot mountain with a fire tower. This fire tower is one of the fire towers needed to complete the ADK Fire Tower Challenge.
