Blue Ridge Parkway Fox Hunters Paradise Trail High Piney Spur
|
Many Blue Ridge Parkway travelers miss this short, easy side trail leading to a spectacular view. Most travelers stop at the Fox Hunters Paradise Overlook located at milepost 218.6 of the Parkway and miss the spur road that leads to a parking lot at High Piney Spur. Don't miss this one!
This paved, flat trail is extremely short and leads to an amazing view. The trail departs from the parking area at an elevation of 2830 feet. The trail ends at a stone observation deck on a dramatic airy perch called High Piney Spur. Looking far below, the ridge soars out to another prominence at Low Piney Spur at 2520 feet. According to USGS maps there is a rough trail that leads from High to Low Piney Spur. If there is still a trail, it is rough and not maintained. The entire spur is located on Parkway property.
The views from the large stone observation deck are spectacular. When we visited in 2007, we watched at least five vehicles that stopped at the overlook and then drove off, missing the spur road completely. This hike is featured in the hiking guide book Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway. Also check out the book Guide to the Blue Ridge Parkway
. There is a map and a few pictures below of this area.
