This was a section of the FLT/NCT we hadn't hiked before.  We were told to hike it while the leaves were off the trees to get the best views.  We wanted to get this section gps'd and put on our website last fall, but decided to wait until spring.  We were running out of time to hike it before the leaves fully bloomed.  When we arrived on Tuesday 4/20, the leaves were budding.  It was a perfect day to do some hiking, especially some tough hiking.  Be sure to pack plenty of water.

We decided to start our hike from the access road parking area.  The dirt road from NY 54 was rough but can be driven slowly or you can start from closer to NY 54 near the Vinehurst Motel and walk the 0.2 mile down the dirt road.  We hiked a tough 9.6 miles, doing all of the trail between NY 54 to Winding Stair Road as well as the June Bug Trail.

If you're looking to do something shorter, may we suggest hiking the NCT/FLT from the parking area to the June Bug Trail at 3.1 miles.  Take the June Bug Trail past the campsite, past the outhouse to an open area near a bench at 3.25 miles.  Retrace your steps back to the parking area for a shorter 6.5 mile hike.  This hike will still be moderate to strenuous as well.  There is a map below outlining our hike on Tuesday.  Use the link above to get a more detailed description of this section of the FLT/NCT.
