|
Date: January 27, 2010
Mileage hiked: 4.6 miles round trip
Location: Canastota, NY
Trailhead: #1: Mount Pleasant Cemetery or #2 Nelson Road.
Name of Trail: North Country Trail
Hike Difficulty: Easy
Features: Reservoir Falls, Canastota Creek, Canastota Ravine, old Lehigh Valley Railroad.
We had a bit of warm weather, which melted much of the snow on the ground prior to this hike. The weather went back to its normal cold on the day we hiked this. We had some sun plus scattered snow flakes in the air as we hiked. There was a dusting of snow on parts of the trail, which hid many icy spots.
This was our third time hiking this section of the North Country Trail. It's a great hike to stretch your legs and enjoy the scenery without too much effort, although it is a nearly five mile hike. The NCTA has built a great looking bridge over Canastota Creek as well as a staircase that takes you either out or into the ravine.

You have two options on where to start this hike. There is a small parking area off Nelson Road just north of Cottons Road. The North Country Trail crosses the road here. Head east if you start at this trailhead. The second option is to start at the small parking area in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, located off NY 5 on Mount Pleasant Street near Canastota.
This is an out and back hike, unless you decide to use two cars (one at each trailhead). There is an elevation gain or loss of 199 feet, depending on which way you are hiking. This hike features 2.3 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail for an overall 4.6 mile round trip hike. This hike is easy and is suitable for everyone in the family.
