Hiking in Adirondack Park Northwestern Adirondacks Watson's East Triangle Wild Forest Wolf Pond
|
Wolf Pond is located in the Watson's East Triangle Wild Forest of the northwestern Adirondacks. There is a dirt road that travels 0.4 miles to a small parking area near a designated campsite overlooking the pond. The pond is located in an area of the Adirondacks that does not see the visitors other parts of the Adirondacks receive.
Watson's East Triangle Wild Forest is located on the western edge of the Adirondacks. Good access to the area from Long Pond Road, about 12 miles east from the Village of Croghan. At the end of the Long Pond Road at a large parking area known as Berggren's Clearing, Bear Pond Road continues across the Oswegatchie Tract easement for 1.6 miles, then into Watson's East Triangle Wild Forest. You'll find the road 4.6 miles along Bear Pond Road from the large parking area at Berggren's Clearing. The GPS coordinates of the junction of the Wolf Pond Road at Bear Pond Road is N44 02.085 W75 06.976.
There is a sign for Wolf Pond Road at the start of the road. The road is in pretty good condition but higher clearance vehicles are recommended. Since it's only 0.4 miles to the campsite, you can make this an easy hike to the pond. From the start of the road, Wolf Pond comes into view after just 0.2 miles. At 0.4 miles you reach a side trail on the right that leads up to a bluff that contains the designated campsite. There is a small parking area on the left and this is the end of the road that allows motor vehicles.
The old road continues on for those who are looking for more of an adventure. Follow the old road and after about 500 feet the road turns right. At 0.3 miles from the parking area you will reach a beaver dam on Wolf Creek, where you will find a campsite. There are a few pictures as well as a few maps of this scenic destination in Watson's East Triangle Wild Forest.
