The scenic Stony Valley Recreation Area is located in St Lawrence County within the towns of Colton and Parishville. The area offers great opportunities for hiking with its 12 mile trail system. Stone Valley is located near Higley Flow State Park. Stone Valley features the fast moving Raquette River with waterfalls, rapids, gorges, rock islands, overhanging cliffs and potholes.

The most popular stretch of trail in Stone Valley is on the eastern side of the Raquette River from the southern trailhead parking area at the end of Riverside Drive (just past firehouse, GPS coordinates are N44 33.328 W74 56.321) to an area known as the Tub (#6 on the map below). This is a round trip of about three miles. This stretch of the trail features four waterfalls as well as many rapids. The waterfalls range in height from 16 feet to 40 feet high.

The best views of the first waterfall, which is the highest at 40 feet, is from the trail located on the west side of the Raquette River. There are tannery ruins along the west side trail. The fourth waterfall is also best viewed from the west side, so be sure to explore both sides of the Raquette River to take in all the scenic spots. The parking area for the westside trails is located next to Colton Museum (don't go across the bridge). The GPS coordinates are N44 33.213 W74 56.305.

There is a map and video below of this spectacular place. To reach Colton, take NY 56 south out of Potsdam.
