St Lawrence County
|
St Lawrence County is located in northern New York, on the border with Canada and along the St Lawrence River. Much of the southern half of the county is located in Adirondack Park. The county seat is Canton and the 2008 estimated population was just under 110,000.
The highest point in St Lawrence County is Mount Matumbla with an elevation of 2688 feet. Mount Matumbla is located in Adirondack Park along the border with Franklin County. The land was formerly owned by International Paper Company, but the state recently bought a conservation easement on the land, giving it public recreation rights there.
With the 43 state forests located in the county plus the section of Adirondack Park that falls in the county, there are numerous places to hike and explore in St Lawrence County. Be sure to check out the 24 mile Rutland Trail that travels across the county following an old railroad bed.
