Hiking in Adirondack Park West Central Adirondacks Moose River Plains Wild Forest Squaw Lake
|
Squaw Lake has become much more secluded now that Indian Lake Road is closed to vehicles 0.3 miles from main trail leading to this scenic lake located in Moose River Plains Wild Forest. To reach the trailhead requires a long drive deep into the Moose River Plains, past the remote Otter Brook and site of Kenwell's, which is on some maps.
It is a short 0.7 mile hike to reach Squaw Lake from the newly created gate and parking area at the end of Indian Lake Road that can be driven by vehicles. This new trailhead is located 6.2 miles south of the T intersection in the heart of the plains. The first 0.3 miles follows the still wide old road. This old stretch of Indian Lake Road will become a future stretch of the North Country Trail. There is a junction on the right for the 0.4 mile trail to Squaw Lake that descends down to the pretty lake.
There is a very overused campsite near the end of the trail. There are a few other little used campsites available on the shoreline for those who are able to bring a boat down to the lake. Many day hikers first hike to Squaw Lake and then continue along the old road to reach Muskrat Pond and Indian Lake. You can also bike this old road and walk the side trails. Look below for a few pictures and a map of this hike. The trail to Squaw Lake is Trail #91 on the map below. Try camping in the area at one of the many primitive sites and explore the hiking trails in the area.
