The 46 Adirondack High Peaks Dix Mountain Wilderness South Dix Carson Peak
|
South Dix is the thirty-seventh highest peak in the Adirondacks at 4060 feet. This mountain is located in the Dix Mountain Wilderness and is one of the peaks within the rugged Dix Range. The summit is open and offers scrambling across to the summit with good views.
The Dix Range was named after John Dix, who was a former governor of New York. There has been some talk about changing the name of South Dix to Carson Peak, named after Russell Carson the author of the book "Peaks and People of the Adirondacks".
There is no maintained trail that leads to the summit of South Dix, however there is a well defined herd path. The main route is to start from the Elk Lake trailhead, and hike to the Slide Brook Lean To, then follow the brook upstream to the Macomb Mountain slide then to the summit of Macomb. From there follow the ridge down to the col between the two peaks and then up to summit.
