Schoharie County

Schoharie County is located west of Albany, southeast of Utica and is located more in the Capital Region of New York rather than Central New York.  However, we decided to include this area in our website due its closeness to the Catskills and the great hiking opportunities within the county.

Schoharie County is about 2.5 hours from the Syracuse area.  The population of the county, according to the 2010 US Census, was 32,749.  The highest point in the county is the 3423 foot Huntersfield Mountain, located in the southern part of the county along the border with Greene County.  We believe that Huntersfield Mountain is the highest point in New York State not in Adirondack or Catskill Parks.

A section of the 347 mile Long Path travels through the county.  This popular long distance hiking trail is popular with day hikers as well as backpackers.  The trail travels from Fort Lee, NJ through the Catskills up to Altamont, NY near Albany.  Future plans is to have the trail end in the Adirondacks.

Mine Kill State Park and Max Shaul State Park are located within the county.  Camping is available at Max Shaul State Park.  The county is home to twenty state forests as well as the 185 acre Franklinton Vlaie Wildlife Management Area located south of Middleburgh.  The numerous state forests offer visitors an opportunity for hiking, camping and other outdoor recreational activities.  It is FREE to camp in state forests, as long as you follow NY DEC camping rules and regulations.

We are still working on this page....
