Mountain

This very popular round trip hike of only 1.6 miles features the spectacular views from the summit of Stony Man Mountain. This hike has an elevation gain of only 340 feet, making this moderate hike possible for most members of your family. Parking is located in the very large Stony Man parking area located at milepost 41.7 along the Skyline Drive. The trail begins at the upper right end of the parking area. There is a guide you can purchase for $1.

The start of this hike features the white blazed Appalachian Trail. At 0.4 miles the Appalachian Trail turns right. Stay straight ahead on the blue blazed Stony Man Trail. Soon you'll reach a Y junction. Veer right here as the other fork will be your return trip. At the horse hitching rail turn right to reach the rocks and the view. You are standing on the parks second highest peak at 4010 feet. Please note there are no pets allowed on this hike.

We recommend purchasing Shenandoah National Park (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map), Hiking Shenandoah National Park and Best Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park to help plan your adventure in Shenandoah National Park.
