Dark Hollow
Falls

This round trip hike of only 1.4 miles leads to Dark Hollow Falls, but some people find the steep climb back difficult with an elevation gain of 440 feet. The 70 foot Dark Hollow Falls is the easiest of the waterfalls in Shenandoah National Park to get to. This is an extremely popular destination in the park and can be very crowded during weekends, holidays or during the summer.

Park at the large Dark Hollow Falls Parking Area located at milepost 50.7 along Skyline Drive. Look for the large trailhead map at the north side of the parking lot. This is where the Dark Hollow Falls Trail begins. A stone bridge near the start of the trail takes you over Hogcamp Branch. About half way along the trail you'll encounter a couple of sharp switch backs. Parts of the trail are steep, although they have built log steps to help with footing.

At 0.6 miles you arrive at a viewing platform for the top of the waterfalls. If you hike another 0.1 miles steeply down to the base of the falls, you'll have the best vantage point of Dark Hollow Falls. To return simply retrace your steps. We recommend purchasing Shenandoah National Park (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map), Hiking Shenandoah National Park and Best Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park to help plan your adventure in Shenandoah National Park.
