North Country Trail in Pennsylvania
Allegheny National Forest
US 6 to
Tionesta Scenic Area
This 11.7 mile section of the North Country Trail features the 2,018 acre Tionesta Scenic Area noted for its 300-400 year old hemlock and beech trees. Tornados from 1985 have damaged some of the huge trees, many are still on the ground. New growth has sprouted in this truly beautiful forest.
This section begins as the trail crosses busy US 6. Soon you'll find a stream and a few campsites, the trail crosses Twomile Run. Cross railroad tracks and then Wetmore Road. You may notice old gas wells in the area and the trail follows an old telephone line ROW. The trail crosses Forest Road 594 and soon the trail travels near Fox's Dam Parking-Camping Area.
The trail now ascends gently as you approach Tionesta Scenic Area. Soon cross FR 469 and then another forest road in the scenic area. The trail was rerouted back to its original route in 2007 after being moved due to the destructive tornados of 1985 that obliterated the trail. The trail follows a pipeline ROW and crosses Cherry Run.
The trail reaches the western terminus of the Twin Lakes Trail. This hiking trail travels nearly 17 miles to the Twin Lakes Recreational Area. After crossing into Warren County the trail begins a steady descent, eventually following Cherry Run and traveling through an old oil field. You may notice the oil wells. The trail crosses the South Branch of Tionesta Creek on Cherry Run Road, leaves the road and reaches PA 948 to end this section.
