Hoffman Notch
Wilderness

NOTE:  This information is based from the information gathered from the DEC plan available at the DEC website.  The info below is for just part of what will be the North Country Trail in the Adirondacks.

Hoffman Notch Wilderness is a 38,488 acre forest preserve in southern Essex County. This Wilderness is connected to the communities of Schroon Lake, North Hudson, Minerva and Newcomb. Many people enjoy hiking to the top of Severance Hill or hiking through Hoffman Notch.  The North Country National Scenic Trail will enter Hoffman Notch Wilderness near its southwestern boundary with Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest.  There will be approximately 13 miles of the North Country Trail in the Wilderness. There were no changes in the proposed route from the 2014 DEC plan compared to the 2007 planned route.

The trail will follow an abandoned jeep road (not shown on map below) north to Bailey Pond for approximately 2.6 miles.  At Bailey Pond the North Country National Scenic Trail intersects and follows the Bailey Pond Trail to its intersection with the Hoffman Notch Trail. The North Country National Scenic Trail will turn north for one mile. At the next trail intersection, the North Country National Scenic Trail will turn east onto the Big Pond Trail for approximately 6.3 miles.

The North Country National Scenic Trail leaves the Big Pond Trail to the vicinity of North Pond with approximately 4 miles of new trail that will be constructed over the shoulder of Jones Hill, along Pratt Brook and eventually to a parking area off US 9 in the Dirgylot Hill area. There are views from Jones Hill. The parking area is approximately 1.6 miles north of Exit 28 of I-87, the trail will travel through a underpass to cross the Northway.   This parking area will become very popular after the trail is built.  A lean to is being planned for construction near the crossing of the Platt Brook.
