The 46 Adirondack High Peaks High Peaks Wilderness Lower Wolfjaw
|
Lower Wolfjaw is either the first or the last 46er you encounter along the Great Range, depending on your hiking route. At 4175 feet, it is the thirtieth highest peak in the Adirondacks. The summit is tree covered, however there are a few side spots with nice views.
Landscape artist Alexander Helwig Wyant (1836–1892) named Lower Wolfjaw, in combination with neighboring Upper Wolfjaw Mountain, back in 1870 for their appearance in profile. The deep col between the two mountains suggested a great pair of Wolf Jaws.
Most hikers are just "passing through" when it comes to Lower or Upper Wolfjaw, on their way to other summits along the Great Range and do not spend much time on either of the peaks. You can start from either the Saint Huberts trailhead (4.5 miles hike one way) or the Keene Valley trailhead (5 miles hike one way) as your approach to Lower Wolfjaw.
