Shallow Hollow
Nature Trail

Located off Knowlesville Road on the eastern boundary of the NWR is the Shallow Hollow Nature Trail.  This unique trail is a pleasantly easy 1.3 mile loop.  More than half of the trail is elevated boardwalk which connects to a gravel trail to take you through evergreen plantations, marsh and forested wetlands. During the spring and summer this trail is one of the better spots on the refuge to find warblers. Other birds include waterfowl, red-winged blackbirds, great blue heron and woodpeckers.

A large signed parking area off Knowlesville Road marks the trailhead for the Shallow Hollow Nature Trail.  The GPS coordinates for the parking area are N43 07.535 W78 19.506 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.  From the parking area, walk to the kiosk and start your hike by walking clockwise on the long wooden boardwalk.  At 0.35 miles reach the gravel dike section of this hike, which requires turning right here.  The trail is easily followed all the way back to the parking area

The trail is marked with numerous benches along the way.  This easy hike has an overall elevation change of just ten feet.  The hike can be enjoyed by all members of the family.  Look below for a few pictures, a couple of maps and a video of this great hike.
