Herkimer County is located in Central New York, east of Syracuse and northwest of Albany.  The northern part of the county is located in Adirondack Park.  The county seat is located in the Village of Herkimer.  The 2008 estimated population for the county was 62,200.  The very popular Adirondack tourist village of Old Forge is located in Herkimer County.

The highest point in the county is a 2723 foot unnamed summit located in a very remote, secluded, rugged part of the county south of Twin Lakes in the West Canada Lakes Wilderness.  There are no marked or maintained trails that lead to the summit.  The closest trail is the Black River Middle Branch Trail that leads you into the 2.5 mile bushwhack part of this tough 6+ mile one way hike.

In the near future, the 4600 mile North Country National Scenic Trail will begin its Adirondack Park journey in Herkimer County at the current Stone Dam Trail off North Lake Road.   The scheduled route has the trail starting in the Black River Wild Forest, then crossing Ice Cave Mountain in West Canada Lakes Wilderness and continue on its journey across Adirondack Park.

The Rondaxe Fire Tower on Bald Mountain

There are two fire towers located in Herkimer County.  The Rondaxe Fire Tower on Bald Mountain is the easier tower to reach via a well used one mile trail.  The Woodhull Mountain Fire Tower is a much longer, tougher hike to the remote fire tower.  The views from Bald Mountain are awesome.

Stillwater Reservoir is located in Herkimer County.  The reservoir is a favorite location for boating, camping as well as hiking.  You'll find numerous lakes and ponds for kayaking as well as hiking adventures.  Big Moose Lake is one location that has hiking trails accessible only by boat.

The Alger Island Campground and Nicks Lake Campground are two state run campgrounds located in Herkimer County.  For those looking for more of a backcountry camping experience, there are numerous lean tos available in the Adirondack Park portion of the county.  Middle Settlement Lake Lean To and Middle Branch Lake Lean To are two popular backcountry hikes in Ha De Ron Dah Wilderness.
