The Gothics at 4736 feet is tenth highest mountain in the Adirondacks and one that offers the most challenging “climb” in that there are large fixed cables as well as ladders at strategic points on the mountain.
The peak itself can best be described as the most dramatic in the Adirondacks after Marcy and Whiteface. There are at least five areas of open rock surrounding the peak giving it a somewhat alpine look. If it only had a pointy top them it could almost pass as a horn. It has three distinct summit bumps along its summit ridge the highest being the last.
There are a number of great routes to the top of the peak all offer great a trip. One route that we have on the map below is a 5.6 mile one way hike with an elevation gain of over 3500 feet. This route is from the Ausable Club property along East River Trail, crossing the Ausable River near Beaver Meadow Falls by taking the Gothic Trail. At the Range Trail turn left to the Gothics.There is a longer, more difficult 7+ mile route with an overall elevation gain of over 5000 feet from NY 73 near St Huberts that includes crossing Lower (4175 feet) and Upper Wolfjaw (4185 feet) Mountains, as well as Armstrong Mountain (4400 feet) before reaching the Gothics. This route is used by those attempting to become Adirondack Forty-Sixers. Some continue another mile to Saddleback Mountain (4515 feet) and even another mile to Basin Mountain (4827 feet). Expect more than just a day hike for such an adventure.
There is another route from the Gardens Parking Area that can be used. Because it is more isolated than Marcy and Algonquin there are usually only a few people on the summit in good weather.
