Hiking in Steuben County Finger Lakes Trail North Country Trail Tobes Hill
|

NOTE: Trail CLOSURE corner of Upper Glen, Laine, and Tobes Hill Rds, continue for now straight north on Upper Glen Road, with a few blazes to reassure you, then curve left onto Dewey Rd. Blazes take you on two farm lanes past end of Dewey to meet up with original trail route.
We have not updated our info below.
If your thru hiking the Finger Lakes Trail / North Country Trail and your walking along Seneca Road North, you'll find numerous restaurants, a few motels and re-supply points available for you in North Hornell. This 3.75 section of the trail begins as the trail leaves County Route 70A and follows a dead end dirt road. This whole section of trail is located on PRIVATE PROPERTY.
The dirt road becomes a faint old farm track and you'll pass an old barn as your hiking. The trail leaves the woods and meets a farm lane after 0.9 miles. As you ascend up the farm lane there are nice views behind you. The trail leaves the lane, follows the edge of a field briefly before entering the woods. The trail now ascends toward the summit of Tobes Hill. Although never actually reaching the summit, the trail does pass by a couple of communication towers.
The trail uses an old road to descend to Tobes Hill Road and there is a short road walk before the trail enters into a stand of pines. The trail descends to Lower Glen Road, follows the road for a few hundred feet before re-entering the woods. You'll pass a trail register and then cross a small stream before ascending again, this time toward the open views of a field.
The views are spectacular as you hike along the edge of the field. Don't forget to look behind you for more views! The views continue until you leave the field into another stand of pines for your final walk toward Turnpike Road. From there you have a 1.1 mile road walk as the trail follows Turnpike Road then takes a right onto Lain Road to the next off road section of the trail. There are more views along Lain Road.
Look below for pictures, a video, maps and a detailed description of this section of the trail.
