The 4239 foot Esther Mountain is one of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks. There is no marked or official trail to Esther Mountain.  Most that do the hike to Esther are ADK 46ers and hike to Whiteface Mountain as well, hitting both of these ADK high peaks with one trip.  Both mountains are located in the Wilmington Wild Forest of the Adirondacks near Lake Placid.

Most make the hike via the Wilmington Trail from NY 431, which first steeply climbs to the 2753 foot Marble Mountain.  This main red marked trail leads to the summit of Whiteface Mountain, with an overall elevation gain of over 3600 feet.  An unmarked herd path to Esther Mountain is found nearly 3.5 miles into your hike near Lookout Mountain. At first the herd path climbs steeply before joining an old ski trail.  At 0.3 miles you reach the summit of Lookout Mountain.

The old path descends into a col at 0.6 miles and then crosses a bog. The old path heads north along the ridge to the 4239 foot summit of Esther Mountain, reached at 1.2 miles from the Wilmington Trail.  The trail ends at the summit where there is a rock plaque to Esther McComb, who accidently climbed this mountain while attempting to hike to Whiteface Mountain in 1839 at the age of 15. The mountain is named after her.
