At 4012 feet, East Dix is the forty-second highest peak in the Adirondacks.  The peak is located within the rugged Dix Range in the Dix Mountain Wilderness.  There is no maintained trail to this peak, however there is a pretty good herd path.  The peak is open with great views.

The Dix Range is very remote and secluded.  You will probably not encounter another person for this hike, even in prime times.  Many hikers do all five of the ADK 46ers that are located on in this range (Dix, South Dix, East Dix, Hough and Macomb), however this is a long strenuous hike that you should be fully prepared for.

The Dix Range was named after John Dix, who was a former governor of New York.  There has been some talk about changing the name of East Dix to Grace Peak, named after Grace Hudowalski who was the ninth person ever to complete the ADK 46er and the first woman to complete the feat.

The most popular route is from the Elk Lake trailhead and following the trail to Slide Brook Lean To.  From here the herd path follows Slide Brook upstream to the slides of Macomb Mountain.  Follow the slide to the summit of Macomb and then follow the ridge first to South Dix, then on to East Dix.
