Hiking in Adirondack Park Debar Mountain
|
Debar Mountain is located within the Debar Mountain Wild Forest in the northeastern portion of the Adirondack Park. Its location is entirely within Franklin County and is the highest point in the Debar Mountain Wild Forest range. The trails are maintained by the Department of Environmental Conservation.
A confusing sign at the parking area indicates that the trip up Debar Mountain is 4.5 miles to the summit, ignore it. It is actually a 7.5 mile out and back hike (3.75 miles to the summit). Red markers guide you along an old logging road for a mile to the intersection where another sign points left to Debar Mountain. You go along about 3 miles on a gentle incline when you come to the Debar Mountain Lean To.
This is a great place to take a break and have lunch. A little further up the mountain you come to the foundation of an old cabin where snakes like to hide. Just ahead there is another 800 feet of exciting climbing - a rocky ladder which ends at a small 3,300 foot summit. From this summit of Debar Mountain you will see Meacham Lake, Clear Pond, and Deer River Flow.
To get to Debar Mountain go to Meacham Lake State Campground on Route 30. You reach the campground by heading to St. Regis Falls (Route 11B east to Route 458 South). Then take the Red Tavern Road east to route 30 and turn right (South) and watch for the campground signs. When the campground is open, there is a small day user fee. The trailhead is near campsite 48. Parking is available in an old gravel pit.
