Hiking in Oswego County New York State Lands Chateaugay
|
Chateaugay State Forest has 3346 acres for outdoor recreation. There are over seven miles of maintained marked hiking trails within the state forest. Unfortunately there are some trails that are not maintained like the old Hobbit and Elf Trails. Those two trails made for a nice loop trail when you also utilized the seasonal dirt Beecherville Road. Although they may look maintained from where Trail 1 ends on Beecherville Rd, they are not maintained. The maintained trails are marked by number and are well worn making them easy to follow.
This state forest is located approximately 7.5 miles east of Pulaski, NY off County Route 2. The trails were constructed by the Oswego County Conservation Corps and the Youth Conservation Corps in 1978-1979. You'll find pines and old stone foundations along the trails. The old stone foundations are remnants from when this area was farmland a long time ago.
Look below for a couple of DEC trail maps, video and pictures from this state forest. This state forest is a gem in Oswego County for those looking for new adventures.
