Appalachian Trail GPS Tracks

This 15.8 mile section of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania features the views from Wolf Rocks, Nelson Vista, Lunch Rocks, Lake Lenape, Council Rock and Mount Minsi. For north bound thru hikers, is the last section of the AT in Pennsylvania. There is only one shelter available during this stretch of the trail. During the summer, reliable springs tend to be tough to find. The section of trail is from Wind Gap to the Delaware River at Delaware Water Gap.

Over the last 40+ miles of the AT in Pennsylvania heading north toward New Jersey there are only two shelters available for thru hikers. The Kirkridge Shelter is the final shelter for northbound hikers in Pennsylvania. The shelter was built in 1948, sleeps eight and there is a privy. The shelter is located just off the AT along a blue blazed trail and offers nice views to the south of the shelter.

This section begins at the AT parking area in Wind Gap near the PA 33 bridge. The GPS coordinates for the parking area is N40 51.645 W75 17.554. The AT leaves the parking area and begins ascent up mountain out of Wind Gap. You are following the white blazes. At 2.1 miles the trail crosses a private road. Be sure you are following white blazes carefully over the next five miles, as it is very easy to get lost along this stretch of the trail.

At 7.0 miles reach Wolf Rocks with nice views of the Pocono Plateau to the north. The trail descends a rocky slope and turns right at 7.2 miles onto an old woods road flanked with stone walls. At 7.7 miles the trail turns left off old woods road. At 8.6 miles reach PA 191 at Fox Gap. There is a small parking area at this road crossing. The GPS coordinates for the parking area is N40 56.127 W75 11.822.

At 8.7 miles the trail reaches a kiosk near the crossing of a green blazed trail. At 9.0 reach the orange blazed trail reffered  as "The Great Walk". This side trail descends 0.8 miles down the mountain to a replica of an early Celtic Christian Church. At 9.2 miles reach the junction of a blue blazed trail on your left that travels to Kirkridge Shelter. At 9.3 miles reach the blue blazed trail on your left that is coming from the shelter. At 9.4 miles reach the surprising views from Nelson's Vista, with spectacular views toward the south.

At 10.0 miles the trail reaches Lunch Rocks, located just 50 feet off the trail on your right. At 10.9 miles the trail crosses under power lines. After a descent over rocks the trail crosses a dirt road at Tott's Gap at 11.1 miles.  At 11.6 miles the trail turns right onto a dirt road. At 13.0 miles a side trail on your right travels 100 feet to a nice view that overlooks the Delaware River Valley.

At 13.1 miles the trail reaches the 1461 foot summit of Mount Minsi. Be sure you are following the white blazes carefully in this section as there are numerous side trails. At 13.4 miles reach a spectacular view of the Delaware Water Gap, Mount Tammany in New Jersey and the surrounding area. At 13.9 miles there is a view to the north of Big Pocono and the Pocono Plateau. At 14.1 miles there is a side trail on your right that leads to Lookout Rock with views of the Delaware River and Delaware Water Gap. At 14.3 miles cross reliable Eureka Creek.

At 14.9 miles the trail reaches Council Rock. At 15.1 miles the trail reaches a dirt road and now follows road, descending. At 15.2 miles reach Lake Lenape with benches and picnic tables. At 15.4 miles the trail reaches the Delaware Water Gap parking area for the Appalachian Trail. The GPS coordinates of this popular parking area is N40 58.788 W75 08.518. The AT follows Lake Road and then on to Mountain Road. At 15.6 miles cross PA 611 and continue another 50 feet then turn right on Delaware Street. Follow the trail to the I-80 bridge. At 15.8 miles reach the I-80 bridge over the Delaware River and the end of this section of the Appalachian Trail as well as the end of the AT in Pennsylvania. The trail crosses the river and enters New Jersey.
