This 6.8 mile section of the Appalachian Trail features the northern part of Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Canopus Lake, Shenandoah Mountain and the RPH Shelter.  You will see views of Canopus Lake and nice views from the 1282 foot Shenandoah Mountain The RPH Shelter was once an enclosed cabin, it was renovated as a three sided shelter with a front porch to meet NPS building codes.  The shelter sleeps six and is open from April to mid November.  There is water available from a hand pump to the left of the shelter.  RPH stands for Ralph's Peak Hikers.

We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT.  We have some info and a map of this section of trail below.

This section of the AT begins where the trail crosses NY 301.  There is parking for about eight cars at this trail crossing.  The GPS coordinates for the parking at the NY 301 crossing is N41 27.157 W73 50.280 for those who have a GPS devise in there vehicle.  You are still hiking in Clarence Fahnestock State Park. The Appalachian Trail crosses a number of park trails in Fahnestock State Park.  For more information on the park trails check out the Park Trail Map.  Check out the NY State Parks website for more information on this park as well as camping here.  A free tenting area with hot showers is available for thru hikers.  Inquire at the park entrance.

The trail travels on the west side of Canopus Lake and at 2.0 miles there is a nice view of the lake. You will also notice a downhill gully trail about a quarter mile south of the view point that leads toward the beach area (which is visible from the view point). At 3.7 miles reach the 1282 foot open summit of Shenandoah Mountain with nice views.  The trail now descends toward Long Hill Road, reaching the road at 4.1 miles.  There is parking available for five cars at the trail crossing.  The GPS coordinates are N41 30.016 W73 48.814 for those who have a GPS devise for their vehicle.

The trail continues to meander and descend along Shenandoah Mountain and crosses power lines at 4.7 miles.  At 5.2 miles reach the Shenandoah Tenting Area, located 0.1 miles off the trail.  Water is available from a hand pump.  At 6.2 the trail crosses a stream and then another at 6.4 miles, which marks the end of the long descent from Shenandoah Mountain.  At 6.5 miles reach the RPH Shelter and soon after cross Hortontown Road. The trail climbs toward Miller Hill Road and crosses the Taconic State Parkway while following Miller Hill Road.  This section ends at 6.8 miles where the trail turns to follow Rockledge Road.
