This 12 mile section of the Appalachian Trail features Ramrock Mountain, Sassafras Mountain, Justus Mountain, Gooch Mountian, Justus Creek, Devils Kitchen and Woody Gap.  This section has one shelter, the Gooch Mountain Shelter built in 2001.

This section starts where the trail crosses USFS Road 42/69 at Hightower Gap. There is parking available for about four cars at this trail crossing. The GPS coordinates are N34 39.815 W84 07.787 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle. At 1.9 miles reach Horse Gap, where there is limited parking for about four cars. The GPS coordinates are N34 39.346 W84 06.348 for the parking area.

Continuing north bound on the AT, the trail ascends 700 feet over the next mile and reaches the summit of 3357 foot Sassafras Mountain at 2.9 miles. The trail descends quickly and reaches Cooper Gap at 3.5 miles.  There are a couple of pull offs located near where the trail crosses Cooper Gap Road. Each pull off can fit about five cars. The GPS coordinates are N34 39.183 W84 05.070 and N34 39.169 W84 05.096 for the two pull offs. The trail now climbs again, reaching the 3224 summit of Justus Mountain at 4.1 miles. After a steady descent the trail will cross Justus Creek on a footbridge at 5.5 miles. The flat area near the creek is called the Devils Kitchen and is a popular camping area.

Reach the new site of the Gooch Mountain Shelter at 6.8 miles. This huge, double decker shelter was built in 2001 and sleeps 14 with a privy nearby. There are tentpads located near the shelter and more tent sites are located further north at the former location of the shelter, near Gooch Gap. The trail reaches Gooch Gap at 8.2 miles and crosses USFS Road 42. There is parking available for about eight cars near where the trail crosses the road. The GPS coordinates are N34 39.130 W84 01.927 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.

At 10.5 miles there are some nice views from Ramrock Mountain. The trail reaches Woody Gap and crosses GA 60 at 12.0 miles to mark the end of this section.  There are nice views from Woody Gap as well as plenty of parking. The GPS coordinates for the parking is N34 40.665 W83 59.976. You'll find picnic tables and a privy at Woody Gap. The small town of Suches is located two miles west and has a Post Office (zip code 30572) as well as a small grocery store. North bound thru hikers have hiked 20.1 miles from Springer Mountain. You only have about 2170 more miles to go!

If your planning a thru hike of the AT you should check out the following books to help plan your hike, Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers' Companion (2017) and Appalachian Trail Data Book (2017). We also suggest checking out Appalachian Trail Guide to North Carolina-Georgia and Appalachian Trail, Springer Mountain to Davenport Gap (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map) to help plan your Appalachian Trail adventure.
